Above, Gil Adams Shihan demonstrates a grappling technique upon the uke he has just thrown to the mat. The curriculum taught by Shihan is very large, and it utilizes forms found within all of the major traditional Japanese martial arts systems (e.g., karate, judo, aikido, jujitsu, etc). This is because traditional Japanese combat employed all of these aspects of fighting, from throwing, grappling, choking, to locking; ancient Japanese warriors fought to win in decisive, hand-to-hand combat - not for points, awards, nor trophies. We do not take part in competition of any kind since we believe that what we study is not capable of being bound by rules and regulations, lest it change the art itself. We study and execute practical, realistic self-defense strategies which are not intended for sport; it is intended for survival, should the case be.
